The dervishes make small, controlled rocking movements of the hands, head and arms as they whirl. Rotating movements are accompanied by rhythmic music dominated by the sound of the reed pipe as well as drums and chanting as the whirling gradually transforms into a rapid spinning ecstatic move sequence.
The whirling is done in three sections, each about minutes in length. The movements of the feet are small and graceful. While one foot remains firmly on the ground, the other crosses it and propels the dancer round. The head and the feet seem to turn independently, and the body appears to be turning constantly. The hundreds of twirling rotations per minute coincide with the theta rhythm in the brain and the chanting they repeat the world God about 99 times makes the dancers dissociate from reality and enter a different state of mind.

Both are symbols of resurrection. Naat-i Sharif — The naat marks the beginning of the ceremony in which a solo singer offers a eulogy to the Prophet Muhammad.
It is concluded with a taksim improvisation on the reed flute ney , which symbolises the Divine breath that gives life to everything. Devr-i Veled — The Sultan Veled walk involves the semazens walking slowly and rhythmically to the peshrev music. The bow is said to represent the acknowledgement of the Divine breath which has been breathed into all of us and is a salutation from soul to soul.
The dervishes then remove their black cloaks. According to Dr. The second selam represents the rapture of the human being while witnessing the splendour of creation and the omnipotence of God.
